Jennifer Moses
“Essence of subject is at the very core of my work. Drawn to the intimate qualities of a landscape, my paintings reflect an emotional response to the symbolic aspects of nature – a moment, a gesture, a feeling. The work evolves from field studies into more in-depth explorations in the studio where compositions unfold and are manifested within a sculpted surface of light. They are an expression of my experiences, and I find myself on a never-ending journey of inquiry and observation – witnessing, interpreting and storytelling. The process for me is a celebration of beauty and the interrelatedness of all things. My greatest desire is to communicate that connection through the visual poetry of painting.”
Moses was born in the Midwest yet spent most of her early years in Virginia. She received her B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University and shortly thereafter moved to New York City, immersing herself in the city’s art scene. In 1994, she relocated to California and embarked on furthering her studies in the plein air tradition. Inspired by the majestic California coastline and western landscape, Moses settled in Ojai and works in her studio when not traveling.
In 2023, Moses co-curated with fellow artist, Dan Schultz, an invitational exhibition at the Ojai Valley Museum. Ojai Mystique featured landscapes of Ojai painted by 21 renowned artists. Moses’ painting, Supermoon, is part of the museum’s permanent collection.
As a contemporary landscape artist, Moses has exhibited her paintings at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, Pasadena Museum of California Art, Carnegie Museum of Art, Bowers Museum, Frederick R. Weisman Museum, and the Hilbert Museum of California Art. She is a Signature Member of the American Tonalist Society and the California Art Club, and her work has been published in Western Art & Architecture, Art of the West, Southwest Art, Fine Art Connoisseur, and American Art Collector magazines. She received the Edgar Payne Award for Best Landscape at the California Art Club’s 103rd Annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Autry Museum of the American West and the Curator’s Choice Award and Patron’s Choice Award at the 2019 inaugural American Tonalist Society exhibition at the historic Salmagundi Club in New York City. Most recently, Jennifer was awarded the Gold Medal for Waterscapes for Midnight Serenade during the 112th CAC Gold Medal exhibition at the Bowers Museum.
Moses is represented by American Legacy Fine Arts (Pasadena, CA), Del Monte Fine Art (Carmel, CA) and Mockingbird Gallery (Bend, OR).
