Gwendolyn Kern

Gwendolyn Kern is a representational artist residing in Billings, MT. She is inspired by America’s landscapes, its history, and iconic characteristics, and is driven by the challenges of thoughtful composition.

From childhood, drawing was a constant in Gwendolyn's life. Her adolescent academics revolved around art, and her early introduction to oil painting was shaped by high school electives and a dedicated tenth grade art teacher. Through books, forums, and experimentation, she has continually explored traditional mediums, studying the techniques of those who came before her. While her college education focused on graphic design, she never relinquished her passion for fine art.

Today, Gwendolyn primarily works in graphite and charcoal, embracing the expressive possibilities these mediums afford. She finds energy and discovery within layered mark-making, exploring dynamic textures and tonal contrasts. Using classical techniques, she combines her design background with her love for traditional methods to create artwork that celebrates and interprets the beauty of nature as she perceives it.
