Erin Spencer

Born in 1979, Erin Spencer grew up in a small town on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Her route to becoming a painter was a circuitous one. She studied archaeology and languages in college and worked through several other interests before discovering a love of painting in 2007. What began as an intriguing interest soon became a daily practice of interpreting the landscape as a subject, especially the shapes and moods of the sky. A move to coastal Rhode Island in 2008 afforded her even more inspiration, and she soon found herself caught up in the misery and joy of a lifelong pursuit of painting. She makes her home there with her husband and their three children by her side.

Erin considers nature to be her greatest teacher. Whether working en plein air or from field sketches in her home studio, she finds that making a painting is like making a poem, distilling visual information into a unique interpretation that gives new perspective. She looks for balance between representation, abstract mark making, and emotional gesture. Erin’s paintings feel timeless and personal, like accessing a memory.

Erin has been exhibiting her work nationally and internationally since 2009, and her work can be found in private collections across the country as well as around the world, including Europe, Australia, Israel, and Japan. She is also a member of The Providence Art Club, The Oil Painters of America and The American Impressionist Society. She has won several awards, including Best of Show at the American Impressionist Society’s Small Works Showcase in 2023.

Erin is currently represented by Dryden Gallery (Providence, Rhode Island), Four Lemons Gallery (Holladay, Utah), The Fox Shop (Holladay, Utah), and Caitlin Wilson Design (Dallas, Texas).
